  • “I am pleased to commend Evil Has a Name: True Stories About the Reality of Evil and How to Defeat It by Father Carlos Martins. Drawing upon his many years of administering healing grace to those afflicted by the Devil, Father Martins describes how, in the various forms of demonic affliction, when Christ is invoked through prayer, He always triumphs. The struggle and suffering from the encounter with the mendacious and murderous devils are real, but Christ has forever provided the remedy that dispels their lies and thwarts their attempts to destroy. Father Martins’ presentation is thorough and addresses the many questions surrounding the reality of demonic activity in the world, placing diabolical possession within the context of the entire spectrum of Satan’s ploys in afflicting souls. While his presentation of diabolical possession and exorcism is key, his descriptions of other forms of Satan’s assaults are an essential help to the many Christians who do not experience possession yet still suffer from the forces of evil—for example, through the use of the Ouija board, occult activities, and witchcraft. Every chapter of Evil Has a Name constitutes an exhortation to the purity of heart which comes to us from the Sacred Heart of Jesus seated in glory at the right hand of the Father.”

  • “I highly recommend The Exorcist Files by Father Carlos Martins. In recent times, fascination with the paranormal has become the rage.  Ouija boards are being sold in stores and even given as Christmas gifts.  Newspaper horoscopes, tarot card readings, and visiting mediums have once again become popular.  Satanic clubs are erected in schools to express cultural and religious “diversity.”  Television shows present Satan as a handsome man who might be a successful advertisement for local spa membership and depict “ghosts” as entities with whom one can engage in conversation.  Father Martins rightly describes this obsession with occult phenomena as how one “opens the door” to spiritual realities.

Father Martins allows the reader to accompany him into his ministry as an exorcist of those possessed by Satan and his legions.  He presents actual cases of possession that come from his direct experience.  What I like most about the book is how he adroitly allows the reader to participate in discerning the presence of evil and, with the power of Christ, driving it out. “

Monsignor Robert Sarno, J.C.D, S.T.L, M.Div / Dicastery for the Causes of Saints

  • “The hardest part for an exorcist is always rendering a diagnosis.  When someone contacts me stating he or somebody in his family is possessed or troubled by a demonic spirit, I must examine him for psychological trauma, physical trauma, psychological disabilities, emotional disabilities, and emotional blocks.  I must look at all those things first because they can be misinterpreted as possession.  Demonic possession can mimic all of them.  Yet, these wounds are often also the doors by which a demonic entity can enter a soul and begin to attack it.  I need to say, “OK, what am I listening to?  Is this someone expressing emotional trauma, a personality disorder, a mental illness, or someone simply exhausted by life?  Or am I listening to someone the Devil is genuinely attacking?”

As an exorcist, this is the only book I have ever read that offers a guideline and overarching vision of how an exorcist diagnoses the demonic.  Father Martins does an excellent job presenting the integration of the medical and psychological sciences within the ministry of exorcism.  Even an exorcist with years of experience will learn insights from Father Martins’ approach.

Father Martins possesses a manifest understanding of demonic activity in the case studies.  The demonic world intersects with our human world in every area.  Formulating all the levels by which demons can attack someone is impossible.  I have read many authors and studied tomes of books that speak of the levels of the demonic.  They apply rigid and simplistic classes and categories to demonic activity, and I have found none of that to be realistic.  The demonic world is far more fluid than we give it credit.  Father Martins’ explanation of the mind of the Devil recognizes that fluidity and accounts for it without oversimplifying it. This book should be mandatory reading in every Catholic seminary.”

Monsignor Patrick Brankin, B.A., M.Div / Exorcist of the Diocese of Tulsa

  • “This book is a practical reference for priests and others desire want to diagnose and understand the presence of the demonic. I am familiar with the Devil’s tactics, having been a priest for over fifty years and an exorcist for many of them. Father Martins gives sound guidance for identifying genuine diabolic activity.

Hollywood has used exorcism and the Devil to produce stories that frighten us.  However, the reality of the Devil should inspire us to seek the spiritual medicine that Christ makes present in his Church.  The cases Father Martins presents will motivate the reader to seek spiritual growth as the best protection against his tactics.”

Monsignor Victor Ciaramitaro, B.A., M.Div / Exorcist of the Diocese of Memphis

  • “Integrating the wisdom of Catholic teaching on exorcism and the knowledge of science, Father Martins offers personal and practical insights to priests, pastoral leaders, psychologists, and physicians on relieving those suffering from demonic affliction.  With each person, he calls upon the grace and guidance of Jesus Christ to identify and exorcise any demonic spirit(s) and pray for God’s Powerful Spirit to restore their intellect and free will to embrace a life of virtue.”

Monsignor Ralph J. Chieffo, B.A., M.Div / Exorcist of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia

  • “No word in this book is wasted, and every insight into the methods of the Liar and its minions must be taken to heart. This is the book for seminarians, priests, hierarchs, and laity alike, written to shake your self-imposed concept of reality.  If it scares you, then it’s achieved its objective; heed the counsel herein.  If it merely adorns your bookshelf, then the demons are celebrating.

Engaging in spiritual combat is critical for the Christian, and I speak as one who has been at war.  Father Carlos Martins embodies the spiritual warrior.  Listen to him.”

Father Nectarios Trevino, Lt Col, J.D.,  / Archpriest of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad

  • “The value of Father Martins’ approach in this book is that it neither focuses solely on the spectacular nor the theoretical.  He begins with concrete, real-life situations and describes the actual details of real people.  In the analysis of the situation presented, he can uncover the reason for the demonic influence (demons are strictly legalistic, therefore, there is some root cause of their attacks) and the underlying theory behind this particular type of demonic presence.  The solutions are then presented.

Demonic influence is real and apparently increasing in the world we find ourselves in today.  Many will identify with one or another of the cases presented in this study.  Therefore, we find here valuable lessons about what to expect, what to be aware of, and how to avoid getting into serious trouble.”

Father John A. Szada Jr., M.Div, PhD / Exorcist of the Diocese of Harrisburg

  • “This book adds much-needed clarity regarding the various aspects of the Devil and his activities that are so common today.  Father Martins’ case studies are a concrete and valuable teaching tool for exorcists and all who desire to avoid the enemy’s pitfalls.  It is the most comprehensive book I have ever seen about exorcism and is a must-read.”

Father Francis Frankovich, M.A., M.Div / Exorcist Emeritus of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston

  • “As a priest ordained for 25 years and serving as diocesan exorcist for the past eight, I greatly value this book, which has given me new insights and knowledge as to how I may effectively serve in this role. Father Martins’ twofold approach of sharing captivating accounts of persons afflicted by diabolical experiences and offering detailed and insightful explanations of those experiences effectively informs and educates the reader about spiritual warfare. I recommend this book for clergy and lay persons alike who wish to know more about the Devil’s tactics and the Church’s protective and liberating response.”

Father David Lies, M.A., M.Div. / Exorcist of the Diocese of Wichita

  • “Father Martins offers a refreshing approach to appreciating the work of exorcism in the Catholic Church.  This book is theologically astute and based on sound pastoral ministry.  It manages to avoid sensationalism while keeping the reader’s focus on the ultimate goal of exorcism: not simply expelling demons but evangelizing and proclaiming the Kingdom of God to persons ensnared by evil.  By demonstrating the process of resolution through case studies of actual exorcisms, Father Martins reveals the reverence the Catholic Church has for the partnership with expert fields of medical and psychological sciences that assist the exorcist’s ministry.  His work causes the reader to marvel at how greater still is the Name of Jesus!”

Father Stephen V. Hamilton, S.T.B, S.T.L. / Exorcist of the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City

  • “Father Martins invites the reader to enter with him into his ministry as an exorcist. He presents reliable, real-life accounts that reflect an exorcist’s daily experience. This book’s content is precious for clergy and laity alike, as there is growing interest in the occult and the dark arts.

Father Martins offers guidelines for spiritual discernment in diagnoses of the demonic, and he presents a comprehensive and wise pastoral approach to freeing those ensnared by evil. The key to eliminating the Devil—or to prevent his attachment—is to locate and heal the wounds we carry, as these are the “open doors” for him to enter our persons. Father Martins effectively motivates readers to seek spiritual growth as the most efficient protection against the tactics of the enemy.

The Exorcist Files should be obligatory reading for all clergy, seminarians, and lay ministers as they will surely be confronted with the spiritual afflictions of those to whom they minister.”

Father Andrew Wojtan, M.A., M.Div. / Exorcist of the Diocese of Orlando

  • “It is Church teaching that the Devil is as active today as ever.  Yet the existence of the Devil is denied not only by our secular world but also by those priests and bishops who, approached by members of the faithful with requests for deliverance from evil spirits, simply refer them to psychiatrists or clinical psychologists.  With the advancement of science and technology, most find religion to be no longer relevant, but it is ironic that in recent years many are turning to the occult to seek security or to experience the “spiritual” realities.  As a consequence, they easily fall prey to the manipulation of the Devil until they realize that they are in need of deliverance.

This book by Fr. Martins, with inspiring true stories, is a testimony to the continued presence of the Devil among us, the victory of our Lord Jesus Christ over the Devil, and the deliverance of those who, being afflicted by the Devil, invoke our Savior and avail themselves of the Church’s exorcism ministry, aided by medical science and psychology.”

  • “In The Exorcist Files, Father Martins gives us a number of powerful and compelling accounts of the different ways Satan works to undermine human happiness.  Father Martins skillfully uses these experiences to explain the main tools our enemy employs for his deceptions.   This combination of teaching and testimony make the book an invaluable read for clergy, counselors, spiritual directors or anyone involved in the care of souls.  I highly recommend it.”

  • “Knowing the difference between mental and spiritual illness is critical for the proper care and understanding of souls. Father Martins’ book, The Exorcist Files, gives on point, logical methodology for discerning between the two. Case studies are offered and analyzed, and the reader is led through the path towards healing and liberation for the relevant subjects. This book is a valuable instrument and diagnostic measure for anyone who offers pastoral care. It is one of the most relevant books of our time!”

Father Daniel J. Reehil, M.A., M.Div. / Exorcist of the Diocese of Nashville

  • “Father Carlos Martins’ The Exorcist Files is a collection of fascinating—and yes, in some cases disturbing—case studies, some of which might be known to the readers familiar with his podcast of the same name.  Father Martins very deftly presents these cases to us, interspersed with theological and scriptural references that will truly deepen our understanding of what is happening in each study, at the same time deepening our understanding of the faith.

While I don’t want to resort to clichés like “SPELLBINDING!” or “A TOUR DE FORCE!” I must admit that this book is indeed both, and more!  I absolutely loved THE EXORCIST FILES.  There is something here for everybody.  For one thing, it is really well written, and Father Martins works language in such a way to make the concepts he presents intelligible for readers at all levels of religion or theology.  As a priest and exorcist myself, I must say that I have found this book to be profoundly enriching in both vocations.  This makes for riveting spiritual reading, simply put. And if the reader will kindly indulge me one more cliché:  “I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN!”…because, truly, I couldn’t!”

Father Sean O’Mannion / Exorcist of the Diocese of Springfield in Massachusetts

  • “This latest book by Father Carlos Martins gives a holistic view and approach to the ministry of spiritual liberation and exorcism. Deriving from various sources—Biblical, Magisterial, Patristic Writings, Medical, Psychological, and the author’s personal experience—Father Martins guides the reader in identifying genuine diabolical activity and explains how to deal with it.

This book instructs on the reality of spiritual warfare while giving hope and assurance that our Lord Jesus Christ—who has already won the battle—is at work through the exorcist, exorcising demonic influences and bringing healing to the afflicted.

The experiences that Father Martins shares in this book will invite readers to seek growth in holiness through the Word of God, prayer, and the Sacraments.”

  • “This work by Father Martins’ is a worthy contribution to the contemporary scholarship on the topic of spiritual warfare which is bringing new light to the Church’s ancient wisdom.  He Illuminates the power of God amidst the ever-present battle with the Devil and lays forth a pedagogy that helps the Christian understand the nature of, and prepare for, spiritual warfare.  As a priest and exorcist, I have found this book to be a beneficial tool that has strengthened my understanding and sharpened my ministry.”

Father Justin Brady, M.Div / Exorcist of the Diocese of Boise

  • “The literature on the dramatic topic of exorcism is extensive and understandably sensationalist. The literature at the other extreme is often dry, academic, and inaccessible to a broad audience. Father Martins brings a much-needed balance, providing intriguing and riveting case histories alongside sound and profound reflection and theological content.”

  • “Physicists make boggling claims that defy our personal experience and our everyday ideas about what is rational: that the entire universe once was condensed into a tiny point, or that subatomic particles can be in two places at the same time. Yet, we readily believe them. To do so, we must concede that they are privileged to see aspects of reality that most people are not, and we must embrace the truth that the universe is more surreal than what appears on the surface.

Father Martins invites readers to a similar moment of humility. His stories, incredible as they might seem, are consistent with what exorcists see daily. But unlike the testimony of physicists, the testimony of Father Martins carries an implicit challenge to face our own fears, examine and reform our own lives, and take seriously the promise of Jesus that he has given Christians a share of His own authority over evil. I highly recommend this book in the confidence that it will serve the greater glory of God.”

As a result, a patient’s spiritual experiences and how they influence—or sometimes even cause—the illness are ignored or dismissed. I highly recommend this book to all, but especially to those involved in the healing arts.”

He demonstrates a keen understanding of the usefulness of the medical sciences when diagnosing the presence of spiritual evil. While the book’s subject matter is intensive, the reader is left encouraged that evil can be overcome with the power of God.  One just has to choose it.”

  • “Father Carlos Martins shares in minute and fascinating detail, his experiences in working with those afflicted spiritually. Materialists, secular humanists, and those unfamiliar with or prone to disbelief in the preternatural phenomena described in this gripping read will have difficulty dismissing these stories as fantasy, distortions, or misperceptions. Yet scientism, naturalism, and modern medicine have failed to provide an adequate explanation, compelling cause, or effective treatment for the enigmatic amalgam of symptoms described in this book that an increasing amount of people are desperately seeking relief from.

People affected by, suffering from, or battling against the ravages of addiction, abuse, vice, disease, mental illness, and/or criminality will find many of these cases to be disturbingly familiar.   The Exorcist Files fills a void by providing a resource one can use to identify, differentiate, and appropriately help those suffering from symptoms that often the victim, his doctors, and those around him don't even understand.  The stories, all based on previous direct experiences of Father Martins, are riveting and page-turning, yet not gratuitous or titillating.  They segue seamlessly into detailed and neatly portioned explanations, definitions, and/or suggestions that "connect the dots" and make sense.  The end result is informative, edifying, and thought-provoking.”

  • “Ours is an age of scientific skepticism. However, as Fr. Carlos Martins’ case files demonstrate, belief in the supernatural is alive and well, especially as it concerns encounters with supernatural evil. Yet, in a post-religious world, people simply don’st have the categories for recognizing or naming evil. Worse yet, they don’t have the necessary tools for countering it. And this is precisely where Fr. Martins’ work shifts from interesting to invaluable. Whether believer or skeptic, Protestant or Catholic, I have no doubt that readers will find Fr. Martins’ approach to the demonic is both compelling and empowering. Evil is real—very real. But it does not have the last word. I am grateful to Fr. Martins for reminding us of both truths.”
